Of Mice and Men

Of Mice and Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck and was released in 1937. This is a story that tells us about the two characters George and Lennie. They are two drifters who tries to make money by working at the fields so they can later fulfill their dreams.

The story is set on a ranch in California, during the Great Depression. This is a period of significantly poverty and unemployment in America. People where in general really struggling at this time in America.

One of the main characters in the book is George. He is described as small and smart. He’s a dynamic character and he is the one that looks after Lennie. Lennie is described as big and dumb, but he is strong so he can still do the work. George and Lennie have this dream about owning a farm with rabbits in all colors. Another character is Old Candy. He’s described as old and has only one hand, because he lost one during the hard work at the ranch. Because of his lost hand he has insurance  money. He later finds out about Lennie and George’s dream and wants to participate. With Candy’s money, Lennie and George now has a bigger hope for their future and this helps them with their everyday struggles.

Another character is Curly’s wife, she’s never given any name in the story even though she’s a present character. It comes through that she had bigger plans for her future and she wanted to be an actress, but instead she’s married to Curly and lives on a ranch. She is an attention seeker, and is snooping around at the ranch because she’s so lonely and she does not like her husband, Curly. There’s a lot of other characters in the book such as, Crooks, Susy, Slim, With and more.

The themes in the book are friendship, loyalty, hope and also loneliness. This is because George and Lennie look out for each other and they trust each other. They have this brotherly bond. They are so loyal to each other its almost unreal. The truth is that George would have a beter life without Lennie. This dream they have is giving them hope, which is a contrast to the time period that was negativ and pessimistic. It comes through in the story that they all are very lonely and does not really have a family. They all just work there to survive. The messages in the book could be that no matter what you should always stand up and look after your friends and family.

It says on many different websites online that the title of the novel is inspired by a poem written by Robert Burns. This poem is about how humans and animals are different but yet so similar because both are mortal. The poem adresses issues like failed plans and in the story Lennie and George both fight themselfs through the difficulties in the Great Depression, by having this strong hope that they one day will own their own farm with rabbits. Sadly these hopes are destroyed by incidents that is beyond their control, which show us the fragile sides of even the best laid plans.

Overall I think the book is great because it brings up important issues such as racism, loneliness and an important period in American history. One of the men working at the ranch, Crooks, is called nigger a lot and he is separated from the other guys at the ranch. This tells us how white people at the time treated dark skinned people.

The story portraits how America was in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. It was a tragedy that placed millions of Americans out of work. Panic struck in 1929 when the stock marked crashed and prices riced in the sky. Millions of people lost their money because banks closed. Many people even became homeless, kind of like George and Lennie. This book has a heavy focus an social and economic problems during this time. The story is in all about migrant workers living during the Great Depression. Lennie and George have this American dream about having their own land.They  try to achieve this dream, but their dreams are suddenly crushed because of the great depression.
